Product Features

PLA is an abbreviation for polylactic acid, which is a new type of bio-based and biodegradable material.

Material Characteristics
  • Source: Starch is mainly extracted from plants such as corn, cassava, and sugarcane, fermented to produce lactic acid, and then polymerized to synthesize PLA.
  • Appearance: Higher transparency and better glossiness than PE.
  • Essence: Belongs to bioplastics.
Key Points of Film Coating Process
  • Temperature: The processing window of PLA is narrower than that of PE, and the extrusion coating temperature requires more precise control, usually between 190°C and 220°C. Excessive temperature can cause PLA to decompose, turn yellow, and produce odors.
  • Weight: Similar to PE, the weight range is roughly between 12-22 gsm to achieve the same barrier effect.
  • Drying: PLA particles are highly hygroscopic and must undergo strict drying treatment before being put into production, otherwise bubbles and degradation will occur during the coating process, seriously affecting product quality.
  • Cooling requirements: PLA has a slower crystallization rate and requires a stronger cooling system to ensure rapid shaping and adhesion to the paper substrate after coating.
